Prior to his death on March 25, 2019, Bird Watcher's Digest editor and Redstart Birding founder Bill Thompson, III, requested to establish a fund in his memory that would promote and expand the cause of youth birding. Its mission is: “To generate funding for scholarships through organizations designated by Bill Thompson, III, that successfully provide outstanding educational opportunities, experiences, and mentoring to young birders and naturalists.”
The five organizations that Bill selected as beneficiaries of this fund provide educational programs, mentoring, camps, and experiences to students who might not otherwise have opportunities to experience and enjoy bird watching. These organizations are:
- The American Birding Association
- Leadership Fayette County (West Virginia)
- The Ohio Ornithological Society
- Hog Island Audubon Camp
- Tucson Audubon Young Birder’s Award
Carl Zeiss Sports Optics provides additional sponsorship to these organizations.
Your donation will be processed through the Marietta Community Foundation, a 501 c3 nonprofit located in Marietta, Ohio. The MCF will mail you a letter confirming your contribution and, at the end of the calendar year, a tax receipt for your charitable donation.

Thank you for helping to keep Bill's dedication to extending the joy of birding to the next generation. Your generous gift will help the birding community support young bird watchers for years to come.
