"One of my favorite aspects of taking part in Christmas Bird Counts is hearing the call of the great horned owl in the crisp winter stillness. The low booming call soars through the darkness from more than a mile away and seems to suggest that this shadowy figure owns the night. When I finally get a glimpse of the bird, it's usually late in the day, when the owl is sitting on its hunting perch in a secluded part of the forest. It stares back at me with an intensity that lets me know it has probably been watching me for a long time. Its cryptic plumage enables it to sit undetected by its prey. In this painting, as the late evening sun sets on the New England woods, the owl's night watch is about to begin."

A limited edition of 300 prints has been created in a horizontal format. The actual image size is 14" x 10", the matted size is 18" x 14", and the framed sized is approximately 20" x 16".
